Where Did The Summer Go????

Wow! Here it is August and it seems like only yesterday we were welcoming our first summer guests........where did the summer go???

It has been a great summer, a little too hot for me but great none the less! We have been blessed with a full house all summer which means we've made many new friends and enjoyed good times with our old friends. Due to the warmer then normal temps, the lake has been great for swimming, tubing, and skiing, and the fishing has been better than expected. We have seen more crappies (up to 15") and large mouth bass caught this year then in all the years we have been here! The small mouth are always a sure thing, with many in the 4-5 lb. range, but the walleyes have been a little tougher to catch......although two of our guests caught the largest walleye of their lives this summer! We are pleased that the Catch & Release Program instituted by the DNR has proven to be successful in preserving and growing our smallmouth bass population.

We also filmed another fishing show with
"Outdoors in the Heartland" which will air next year and our Tower Cabin is pictured in the August issue of Cabin Life Magazine.

A new addition to this Blog is an updated fishing report from our guides at Yukon Jack Outfitters. Check it out below!

AUGUST FISHING REPORT
Crappies - hitting in 10-12' water off weed lines on jigs
Smallmouth - hitting top surface late evenings. Tubes earlier in the day in 20' water
Walleye - Lindy Rig with night crawlers in 20-30' water

Magazine Article

Wilderness Lodge featured in Cabin Life Magazine

Today I received my copy of the May 2011 issue of "Cabin Life Magazine" and we have been given a 4 page spread titled, Rustic Northwoods Decor!

Words cannot express how grateful I am to my photographers, Joe Edmond and Jerry Denny for the fantastic photos, and to the the writer, Christy Heitger-Ewing, for her patience and determination to make this project go! The creative ability of these people leaves me in awe!

It is very humbling to open a magazine and see your home, business and passion turned into an article. I am so grateful and I thank God for His blessings!

Don't Delay - Book your Cabin TODAY!

It's time to make your summer reservations!

We have had a busy winter and are quickly booking up for the summer so don't miss the opportunity for an Unforgettable Northwoods Vacation at Wilderness Lodge!

We are so excited to share the news that our Lodge & cabins will be featured in the June issue of Cabin Life Magazine. This is our first magazine article, however, we are also blessed to be featured on three Outdoor TV programs!

In other news, we have added a stone patio and grill area near the lake and will be constructing a log pergola over the area this spring. We also hosted our first lakeside wedding last August and will be hosting our first indoor wedding next month. Watch for pictures on the website.

The Spa continues to be a big hit with both the men and women and we are now offering Spa Get-Away packages! Check out our Packages & Retreats Page for more details.

We are looking forward to an early Spring and getting everything ready for the summer. We hope to see all our old friends again and we look forward to meeting and making new friends.

Have a Happy Spring!

Spring is Here!

Spring has officially arrived on Turtle Lake! The ice is melting and it looks like the lake will be completely open in a few days, thanks to the unseasonably warm weather we have been enjoying! This of course could mean that the fish will be spawning early, unlike the last few years when the spawning season was a few weeks later then normal. It seems like we just don't know what to expect anymore.....one year we still have ice on the lake for opening fishing day and the next year the ice has been gone for over a month! It's a good thing Turtle Lake is a fantastic year round fishing lake!

We still have a few small construction jobs to complete on the Trapper and Tower Cabins before we welcome our first guests so we are grateful for the warm weather! The warm temps have also made it possible for us to get a jump on our spring cleaning and yard work, and we may even get the docks in a month early!

In March we completed the new kitchen renovations, just in time to host our first Women's Retreat. The Retreat was a big success and we are already planning the next series and our first Girls Getaway! Plans are also underway for a Men's Retreat and an Open House.....so watch for more details.

We have confirmed that we will be filming at least one more outdoor TV show this year, a bear hunt with Dan Young, host of the "Outdoors Traditions TV Show". We are also working with a few other shows that are interested in filming another bear hunt and possibly an ice fishing show. It is all very exciting!

We will also be adding a Fishing Report to our website with weekly updates from our guides so you know what to expect before you arrive. You will find the Report on the Guide Page of our site.

Well, that just about sums up the news around here. We look forward to seeing all our old friends again and meeting all our new ones this summer!

Happy Spring & God Bless!

Happy Valentines Day!

Well, here it is the middle of February already and the pressure is on to finish the list of renovations before our busy summer season begins.

The new Lodge kitchen is coming along with only a few minor glitches to deal with. It has been a challenge converting a 1920's log porch into a functioning modern kitchen but starting in June we will be offering meals with our Retreats and All-Inclusive Hunting and Fishing Packages.

The Day Spa is still in the planning stages but I am hopeful that it will be completed and ready for our first clients by June.

The response to our first two TV shows has been overwhelming! The phone began ringing at 6:15 a.m. the day of the first airing and has been steady ever since! It has been a wonderful experience and we are looking forward to meeting many new guests this summer. We also want to thank all of you who called or emailed to say you enjoyed the shows!

Our next show will air in July and it will feature black bear hunting with Dan Young, host of the Outdoors Traditions TV show and Outdoors Dan radio show. Dan will be joining us again this fall to film another bear hunt and we are finalizing the details to film a bear hunt for another Outdoor TV program........so stay tuned!

Happy New Year!

If you are new to our website, I'd like to welcome you to Wilderness Lodge! If you are a returning visitor then you've already noticed that a lot has changed.....beginning with our website! The new site went up on New Years Eve, just in time to celebrate the start of a new year and the start of many wonderful new things here at the Lodge.

As you look through the website you will notice that we have added two more cabins, the Trapper's Cabin and the Tower. Both of these cabins are original to the resort, but time had taken its toll on them. Through a lot of hard work we have brought them, "back to life" and they will once again be welcoming guests this summer!

Another new addition, coming in June, is our Serenity Day Spa. The spa is located in the west wing of the Lodge and will be open to the public and our guests. Now you can indulge yourself with one of our sumptuous body treatments or massages as you relax in our beautifully decorated rooms overlooking the lake; or for a bit more adventure, try our exclusive "Massage Cruise" - a relaxing 1/2 hour lake tour followed by an on-board massage in a secluded bay.

2010 will also bring one of my long awaited dreams to fruition - to find a secluded place where we could offer Christian Retreats and host small group events. My vision took shape as soon as we set foot on the property twelve years ago. The historic log Lodge and cabins were everything I had ever dreamed of and the incredible peace and serenity that I felt as we walked along the shore, gazing out over the lake as two eagles soared overhead, convinced me that this was the perfect place to make it happen!

So despite the deteriorated condition of the buildings we purchased the property and put together a rather aggressive renovation plan. However, we quickly found out that things do not always go as planned! The extend of work that needed to be done far exceeded our expectations and we found ourselves with a proverbial "Money Pit" on our hands! But with spirits high, we kept moving forward and little by little, year after year, our hard work brought us a little closer to my dream.

Now I can finally say, the end is in sight! With just a few final projects to complete, I am now able to devote my time to doing what I love - teaching and developing new and exciting Retreat programs to share with our guests! So please take a few minutes to look through our Retreat page where you will find a list of the programs currently being offered.

If this weren't enough, Michael has also seen one of his dreams come to pass. His outfitting business, Yukon Jack Outfitters, will be featured on three Outdoor TV shows that will air on Fox Sports this year! The first two programs are fishing shows that will appear on "Outdoors in the Heartland" with hosts, Larry Woodard and Bob Richardson. Larry spent an exciting, action packed week with us last summer when Michael treated him to some world class Minnesota fishing on several area lakes and rivers.

Later that fall we also filmed a black bear hunt with Dan Young, host of "Outdoors Traditions TV" and the "Outdoor Dan" radio show. The hunt was a huge success and Dan was very pleased to have taken his first color phase bear!
We will post the dates and times the shows will air as soon as we receive the schedule.

So I think that just about wraps it up for the news around here! A lot has changed over the years, but one thing that has remained the same is the wonderful people who continue to cross our path. Some are just stopping in for a tour, others are staying as our guests, many have become dear friends, but each one brings a unique blessing to our lives and we are very grateful!

Happy New Year and God Bless!

~Sue Beach
